Botox

Both men and women start developing facial expression lines before they even reach 30 years of age. The appearance of frown lines between the eye brows, forehead wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes might give your look a tired and dull appearance. Botox quickly transforms a tired and aging appearance by smoothing out your skin. The result is a fresher and more ‘invigorated’ look.

Overview

Botox is a popular rejuvenating cosmetic treatment favoured by women although increasingly gaining in popularity by men. Although Botox is also used for the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, as a facial cosmetic procedure, it quickly transforms a tired and ageing appearance. A facial analysis with one of our plastic surgeons will determine the most appropriate areas for Botox treatment. The 3 most popular areas treated are frown lines (glabellar lines) , crow’s feet wrinkles on the eye contour area and forehead lines.

During the consultation, it is important that together with our surgeon you identify the areas of your face you need to treat. At the same time to ensure your expectations are met you should explain the kind of look you would like to achieve to our surgeon.

Botox contains Botulinum Toxin A and is injected superficially into the facial muscles at specific points. The Botox disrupts the activity of the muscles, smoothing unwanted facial expressions . The treatment is virtually painless and takes less than 20 minutes. There is no downtime and you are free to go about the rest of your day without disruption. Full results are usually visible up to 72 hours after treatment.

The injection process blocks the movement of the muscle under the skin and irons out your appearance

All You Need to Know

Botox works best on those wrinkles and lines that become active when you change your expression and move your face. Deep frown lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes produce the best results as these wrinkles are easily targeted and minimized with Botox. The injection process blocks the movement of the muscle under the skin and irons out your appearance.

How long does Botox last?

Botox is a non-permanent treatment that temporarily smooths out the appearance of facial lines for about 3-6 months. Your treatment plan will be devised to maximize the results. Additional injections might be needed to keep lines at bay.

It is important to be realistic about the results Botox can create. While the treatment can produce dramatic and quick results the outcome may also differ from what you hoped it would be. Be realistic in your expectations in order to be pleasantly surprised.

Does Botox freeze your face and does it keep you from expressing emotions?

Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form. Only in case of an overdose or misdirection of the injection facial expressions may be distorted. Therefore it is of great importance to choose a qualified physician to do your Botox injections.

Should I stop taking medications before a Botox treatment?

To help minimize post-Botox bruising try to avoid taking the following medication a week before the treatment:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • St John’s Wort
  • Vitamin E
  • Omega 3 and Fish Oil
  • Ginseng
  • Ginko Bilboa

Avoiding alcohol for a few days, both before and after the procedure, is also recommended.

How much Botox is injected?

Botox is measured by unit. Each vial of Botox is diluted with saline to produce a syringe that is ready for injecting into the muscles under the skin. The quantity will vary according to precise dilution, the specific treatment required and the technique used to inject the dose.

Are there any risks involved?

As with any cosmetic procedure there are a number of side effects associated with the treatment. These include: infection, inflammation, localized pain, swelling, bruising, redness and/or bleeding. You will be given aftercare instructions to help minimize the discomfort and side effects. Other side effects may also include: pain and discomfort in the area of the injections, tiredness, headache, dry mouth, blurred/double vision and dropping or swelling of the eyelids.
