Tear Trough
As part of the ageing process the skin on our faces begins to sag and develop lines and wrinkles. This can be particularly pronounced around the eyes as this is where a lot of muscle movement takes place and skin tends to gather. In some people, the lower eyelid (so-called ‘tear trough’) can begin to take on a dark appearance, looking deeply shadowed or hollow. Sometimes, deep tear troughs can make you seem a lot older than you are, and it’s for this reason that you may want to seek treatment. Restylane is a dermal filler which is used very effectively in a non-invasive treatment to reduce the pronounced appearance of tear troughs.
Overview
The dark, hollow-eyed look of tear troughs is created due to the weakening of the orbital septum and loss of soft tissue in the cheek area. This then leads to a tear trough depression, making the affected area more pronounced and obvious. People who have this problem tend to feel that they look a lot older than they are.

Restylane is administered via an injection through a very fine needle into the under-eye area, and it acts a filler on loose skin. This treatment is a popular one because it offers almost complete rejuvenation of the tear trough through the unique consistency of the filler, giving the eye a very natural appearance. It’s very important to be treated by a qualified medical professional because this is a delicate area for procedures to be carried out.
It’s common for other types of tear trough treatment to create a ‘puffy’ look, or have side effects or sub-standard cosmetic outcomes.

All you need to know
People tend to want cosmetic surgery when they feel that an aspect of their appearance is not how they want it. With tear trough procedures, sufferers have dark circles under their eyes and/or a hollow look, which is both ageing and can look unhealthy. To be suitable for this treatment you will need to have good skin elasticity and adequate skin thickness for the procedure to be effective.
However, if your skin is not ideal then there are other options, such as staged treatments which will help achieve the same effect.
Similarly, the structure of your face is important. The position of the orbital rim to the tear trough is a very important consideration for an optimum outcome. Your doctor will be able to advise you on this.
How will the treatment be performed?
You will be treated by a qualified medical professional, who will use fine needles to inject Restylane into your under eye area.
How much Restylane is needed?
Most patients normally require just one syringe of Restylane.
Will it be painful?
Restylane tear trough injections are not painful.
Are there any side effects?
Mild bruising and swelling of the area after treatment is not uncommon. This can last for up to a week, so timing of the treatment is very important. You shouldn’t have this done if you have an important function or event to attend where you want to look your best.
Is there anything I need to avoid before or after the procedure?
Yes. It’s very important to avoid medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or anything that may cause bleeding for 48-72 hours in advance and for the same time period afterwards. Paracetamol is fine. You could also consider taking arnica tablets the week before your Restylane injections as this will help prevent any bruising.
